After a standstill (and assumption that the Baltimore Orioles would hold onto their star third baseman), the Yankees could be back in the mix for a blockbuster trade.
According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Yankees checked back in on a possible Machado deal this week.
The New York Yankees, apparently excited about the idea they could make their excellent winter even better and more star-studded, were back in contact with the Baltimore Orioles regarding Manny Machado this week, sources say.
While the likelihood of a deal (maybe with anyone) still seems less than great, the mere idea of Machado joining the Yankees’ already amazing lineup is sure to excite all of New York.
Interestingly, Heyman believes the Yankees–above the Red Sox, Phillies, Cubs or any other suitor–could have the best chance to land the 25-year-old two-way star.
The Yankees actually may have the best chance of several contenders to land Machado, but word still is that the Orioles haven’t been tempted by anything they’ve heard from anyone regarding the superstar infielder. The rival Red Sox, plus the Cubs, White Sox, Cardinals, Diamondbacks and Phillies all have been linked to Machado – but in some ways the Yankees might make the most sense, if something can be worked out.
Part of the reason for that belief: The Yankees seem to believe Machado wants to eventually land on the big stage and in a market like New York.
And here’s another key to the Yankees’ interest: Word out of New York is that the Yankees believe they’d have a decent chance to sign Machado long-term due to a belief (right or not) that he’d have a special interest in coming to New York. He is due to become a free agent after the 2018 season. Their feeling is that Machado would love to be on the big stage like New York or Boston (another team with reported interest) if not in his hometown of Miami, and at this point there’s no chance he’d be a fit for the rebuilding Marlins, who obviously have deep financial concerns and can’t expect to win for at least three years.
The report doesn’t paint the picture of an imminent deal and listed the road blocks (New York’s unwillingness to give up an outrageous package; Orioles owner Peter Angelos), but left the door open.
Former MLB GM Jim Duquette thinks a Manny Machado to the Yankees trade could work this winter.
In a down year (by his standards) in 2017, Machado hit 33 home runs and posted a 3.5 WAR. Since becoming a regular in 2013, Machado owns an .809 OPS and has racked up 26.3 WAR.
